In a situation where new tiles will be installed over existing tiles, a layer of waterproofing membrane can be applied via the following methods:

  • Waterproof coating – The membrane is in liquid form that is adhesive over existing tiles. It forms a barrier that prevents water from entering the existing tile joints.
  • Sheet membrane – A sheet waterproof membrane is applied to the whole surface with adhesive prior to new tiling adhesive and new tiles installed.

These methods only work where the existing tile condition is in good condition. If the existing tiles are loose or not firmly fixed to the substrate, it may be necessary to replace and remove them.

Once the cracks have been identified, silicone caulk will be used to reseal these joints. Since grout is not waterproof, resealing the joints can help prevent water intrusion to the substrate.
